About the Project

In recent years, India has witnessed a paradigm shift regarding youth development, specifically focusing on livelihood generation through micro-entrepreneurship. However, a severe lack of job opportunities—especially for rural youth—has forced many to migrate away from their communities in search of employment. Furthermore, as the world becomes increasingly reliant on digitalization, a significant gap has emerged between urban and rural communities regarding access to technology-based services. Rural areas are fast being left behind. In recent years, there has been paradigm shift in the development of youth in India with a huge focus on livelihood development through micro entrepreneurship. A severe lack of job opportunities for youth, especially rural youth, has led to entrepreneurship, even at the micro level, as a necessary and viable alternative for livelihood generation. Providing the opportunity for youth to successfully start and run a small business will improve rural economy and lead to better quality of life for the youth, their families, and their communities. Promoting rural enterprise will also serve as a key to stem the migration of youth and bring about a reduction in the number of youth who move away from their communities in search of employment elsewhere. With the advancement of technology, and the ever-growing reliance on digitalisation, rural communities are fast being left behind on the availability of technology based services. A huge gap exists between urban and rural communities in this regard. To bridge the gap between urban and rural communities, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), in partnership with Development Focus (DF), have been implementing an innovative Digital Entrepreneurship Program with the aim to create rural e-entrepreneurs from socially and economically disadvantaged rural communities. Started as a pilot project in 2017 in North Karnataka, and expanded in 2018 to include Mizoram, the project is being further expanded in 2020 to include a new module in Odisha. Consisting of 4 clusters, implemented in Rayagada and Gajapati districts, this new phase (termed as Phase 5a) will extend from March 2020 – Feb 2025 and will be implemented by PREM, Berhampur.

The Challenge: The Digital and Economic Divide

The Challenge: The Digital and Economic Divide

The Solution: The BridgeIT Initiative

To address these disparities, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), in partnership with Development Focus (DF), launched the BridgeIT program. Following successful pilots in North Karnataka and Mizoram, the program expanded to Odisha in 2020 (Phase 5a), where it is implemented by PREM, Berhampur.
BridgeIT is a micro-entrepreneurship program designed to bridge the IT gap between urban and rural India. By building the capacity of rural youth in e-entrepreneurship, the project aims to:
1. Build Skills: Focus on IT, entrepreneurial, communication, and life skills,.
2. Boost Confidence: Provide the necessary means and support for youth to earn a dignified livelihood.
3. Localize Services: Enable youth to bring much-needed IT-related services directly into their communities.
The Solution: The BridgeIT Initiative

Key Objectives

The overall aim is to provide livelihood opportunities for rural youth through e-entrepreneurship while simultaneously providing computer-based online services to the broader community.
• Create E-Entrepreneurs: Transform youth from socially and economically disadvantaged communities into self-sufficient business owners.
• Service Delivery: Make essential computer and e-based services available to rural populations.
• Educational Support: Provide supplementary academic inputs for children in government primary and middle schools through computer-based education.
• Adult Literacy: Provide functional literacy training to rural adults through computer-based education
Key Objectives

Implementation Model

The project is community-anchored, involving local participation in planning and selecting entrepreneurs. It is implemented over a 5-year period, consisting of:
• 2 Years: Intensive interaction and handholding.
• 3 Years: Supplemental support.
Target Group: The project supports a total of 32 participants across 4 clusters (2 in Rayagada and 2 in Gajapati district). A strong emphasis is placed on empowering young SC/ST women to take up this opportunity to establish their own e-enterprises.
The Dual Role of Entrepreneurs: While the primary goal is for youth to build sustainable businesses, the program includes a mandatory "giving back" component. Entrepreneurs must:
1. Provide functional literacy to non-literate rural adults.
2. Provide supplementary academic inputs to children in local government schools.

• Banking at the Doorstep: Entrepreneurs like Ajit Sabar (Padampur Cluster), Mr. Narayan Sabar, and Aso are providing vital banking and cash withdrawal services to their communities, reducing the need for villagers to travel long distances.
• Women in Tech: Sabitri, a new entrepreneur from the Mohana Cluster, recently received her laptop to launch her enterprise, highlighting the program's focus on gender empowerment.
• Digital Commerce: Entrepreneurs like Jagakalia Mallick (Mohana Cluster) and Parsing Gomango have established "home shops" to deliver services.
• Continuous Learning: Participants receive ongoing training—such as sessions on Income, Expenses, and Profit via Zoom—ensuring their businesses remain sustainable
